Recreation Director's Report
September 8, 2009

On Thursday, August 27, 2009 the Recreation Department & the Pittsford Seniors hosted our monthly luncheon at the Vermont Police Academy. 30 seniors from the local community attended the luncheon. August marked the 2 year anniversary of this popular program. The monthly turnout averaged 44 the first year and 41 participants the second. Wonderful food and wonderful support from the Vermont Police Academy helps this program prosper. Each meal is made from scratch by the Chef Bob and his assistants, the same crew that prepare & cook the meals for the Academy.

This fall the Recreation Department is offering our annual Hunter Safety Course. Pittsford resident Mr. Rick Hedding is the instructor for this class. He enjoys teaching his students knowledge & skills that most of them will retain and use for the rest of their lives. This is the 5th he has taught this program for the Recreation Department. Mr. Hedding is a State of VT Deputy Game Warden.

The Youth Soccer Program kicked off another Saturday morning season on Saturday, September 5. Over 110 children 4 years old - 6th grade are participating in this 5 week program. Participants numbers are close to our normal trend (92/2008, 98/2007, 93/2006, & 90/2005). Mr. Dick Williams, Otter Valley Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, and some of his players are assisting me again with the actual on-field instruction of the 4 & 5 year olds and the 1st &  2nd graders. This is the 8th straight season the OV girls varsity soccer team has been associated with this program. Games will begin soon for the 5th/6th grade teams; it is the Recreation Department's responsibility to find individuals to referee these games.

Other programs the Recreation Department is sponsoring this fall is the Pittsford Pumpkin Party, a Halloween Teen Dance, Men's & Women's Open Basketball, and Cardio-Kickboxing/Aerobics. Usually each November the Recreation Department sponsors a Snowmobile Safety Class, and the Annual Holiday Craft Fair. Family Fun Nights already have been scheduled for the winter.
