MINUTES OF October 14, 2008

Meeting was called to order by Rob Ketcham at 7:05 pm. Members of the Recreation Committee who were present include Mark Poljacik, Kathy Brown, Mark Winslow, Jenny Parker and Kathy Shortsleeves.

Recreation Committee member Scott Eugair arrived at 7:20 pm.

Recreation Director Randy Adams was also present.

The minutes of August 12, 2008 were read and accepted. M. Poljacik made the motion to accept the minutes as read.

K. Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

R. Adams presented his September & October Recreation Director's Reports. Other highlights made by the Recreation Director were: 22 people, ages 9-up, successfully passed the Hunter Safety Course the Recreation Department ran in September at the Vermont Police Academy. 2008/09 Tuesday evening Kickboxing/Aerobics has begun, and the Recreation Director has researching the 2009 Snow Bowl Ski Program. Also R. Adams mentioned that he had indeed gone himself to the College of St. Joseph's in Rutland, to pick up the used scoreboard that the college donated to the Recreation Department. He said he met with Deb from "Jim Scoreboard's" to discuss the details and to determine when they could install the unit.

Bench Placement from Eagle Scout Candidate at the Recreation Area

R. Adams informed people that there will be 11-13 benches "planted" at the Recreation Area by Eagle Scout candidate Ethan Nordmeyer. R. Adams walked the Recreation Area with Nordmeyer and gave a slide show presentation as to where he thought each bench might go. Mr. Nordmeyer has developed an entire work plan that had to be approved by the Boy Scouts of America before he could even begin this project.

Recreation Department Budget FY 2010

The Recreation Director let the Recreation Committee know that budget materials have been sent to the various department heads. He informed them that the five-year capital budget or "General Government Capital Budget" were due October 17, while department budgets are due October 24. R. Adams invited all present to stop by his office if they would like to see the budget he creating.

Recreation Area Gate Closing (12/1 not 11/1)

Since R. Adams was hired in 2001 the front gate at the Recreation Area has closed for the season on or around November 1. R. Adams informed the Recreation Committee that a resident and frequent user of the Recreation Area approached the Town Manager & the Select Board about the front gate being opened later in the year. After a few discussions with the Town Manager, R. Adams suggested December 1 as logical choice because the VAST Snowmobile Trails could be open as early the second week in December and he could not drive on their groomed trail, which is the Recreation Area driveway. R. Adams went on to remind the Recreation Committee that because of the way the Recreation Area is so spread out and wide open residents have access to the Recreation Area 12 months out of the year no matter if the front gate is locked or not.

All Other Business

M. Winslow suggested that the Recreation Department offer a Bow Hunter Safety program. He said that there are a very limited numbers of bow hunter classes in the area and that he knows there is a number of folks in Pittsford who'd take the class. M. Winslow suggested offering this program during the late winter. R. Adams mentioned that he liked the idea and would look into finding an instructor.

With no further business to discuss, M. Poljacik made the motion to adjourn the meeting.

K. Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 7:52 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Randy Adams, Recording Secretary

Rob Ketcham, Chairman
