Eighteen people indicated on the sign-in sheet that didn’t live in Pittsford, were normally one or two attend. R. Adams wanted to make the Recreation Committee aware of the situation because if the trend continues he and Bonnie Stewart will have to look at ways to control the trend.

R. Adams passed around a flyer he received from the Lake Champlain Sea Grant on a very appropriate workshop that he’s planning to attend on May 5. Reducing & Preventing Beach Closures on Lakes and Rivers in Northern New England will discuss strategies for detection, correction, and financing. It will also provide training, tools and guidance for freshwater beaches on lakes, rivers, and at swimming holes. R. Adams asked the Recreation Committee if there was anyone who’d like to attend this workshop with him, that it might be beneficial if two people attended more information might be obtained. M. Cioffredi mentioned to R. Adams that she might be interested because it might be good information for her classroom at Otter Valley.

Ice Rink Ideas for the Select Board

At the February Recreation Committee meeting R. Adams informed the Recreation Committee that he had been asked by the Select Board to look at different possibilities for an ice rink. R. Adams also added that the Recreation Committee should consider the committee’s view of expanding the usage of the Recreation Area during the winter months as it may play a factor to a final location of an ice rink. Based on that information the Recreation Committee brought ideas for a brainstorming session. The Recreation Committee showed solidarity when they decided that would be good for the residents of Pittsford if the Recreation Area was more utilized more in the “off season”. M. Poljacik made the motion that read Recreation Committee believes that utilizing the Recreation Area more throughout the traditional off season, November-March, would better serve the needs of the community.

M. Cioffredi seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

The Recreation Committee went on to discuss three different possibilities for an ice rink.

“New Gym” at Lothrop School Discussion

R. Adams stated that he will talk with M. Winslow to see if he was still planning to attend a Lothrop School Board meeting, now that new members are in place, to see what kind priority this topic may be for this new group of directors, if any. It was also noted by R. Adams that it was interesting to him that Lothrop School was scheduling a school wide event, a Salsa Dance, that they couldn’t be host in their own gym.

New Business Cont.

2006 Recreation Area Fees

R. Adams stated that last year the daily operations at the Recreation Area ran rather smoothly, usage was up and that he couldn’t see any reasons why to change the rates at this point. K. Shortsleeves asked how many season passes were sold last summer (60 season passes were sold in 2005 almost double the 32 from 2004. Swim Lessons were up 119 in 2005 compared to 72 in 2004, Tennis Passes were also up 24 were purchased in 2005 compared to 15 in 2004). K. Shortsleeves made the motion to recommend to the Select Board that the 2006 Recreation Area Fees be set at same rate as last season.

M. Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Recreation Department & Lothrop School Salsa Dance, April 28, 2006

The Recreation Committee was informed by R. Adams that the Recreation Department and the Lothrop School were sponsoring a Salsa Dance to be held at the VT Police Academy. Meredith Voutas, Lothrop Principal first contacted the VT Police Academy to see if Lothrop School could host a “Latin” themed dance in the VT Police Academy gym for the community. M. Voutas was told to discuss it with the Recreation Department since they have it reserved for Woman’s Basketball, every Friday night September – May and they have all the proper paperwork established. R. Adams was very receptive to cosponsoring a Latin Dance with Lothrop, however at the time Lothrop hadn’t been able to contract the entertainer they wanted and they were looking for an alterative. When they finally got back to the Recreation Department with a date, April 28, it happened to be the same night as our annual Spring Fling Teen Dance. Fortunately without too much of a hassle R. Adams was able to reschedule the teen dance to accommodate Lothrop.

R. Adams stated that he had received a “Letter of Interest” to fill the Committee’s vacancy late that afternoon from Scott Eugair. He passed around the letter so members had a chance to read it. S. Eugair spent about two minutes speaking about himself and what he could offer the Recreation Committee if he was appointed to the Recreation Committee. S. Eugair left the meeting at 8:40 pm.

After a short discussion M. Poljacik made the motion to recommend to the Select Board that they appoint S. Eugair to the Recreation Committee.

M. Cioffredi seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

With no further business to discuss, K. Shortsleeves made the motion to adjourn the meeting.

K. Brown seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
