Recreation Director Randy Adams was also present.
Recreation Committee member Michele Cioffredi arrived at 7:12 pm.
The minutes of December 13, 2005 were read and accepted. M. Winslow (with proper grammatical corrections) made the motion to accept the minutes as read.
M. Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT
There was no January 2006 Recreation Committee meeting due to a lack of a quorum. Recreation Director R. Adams asked the Recreation Committee to take a moment to read the January Recreation Director’s Report. R. Adams highlighted the portion of his report where the Select Board has asked him to look in to different possibilities for an ice rink. R. Adams wanted to make the Recreation Committee aware of this request and asked them to think about the topic for a bit before the next meeting. R. Adams stated that he’d like to have a brainstorming session at the March meeting so that he could get a report done and present it to the Select Board.
The Recreation Committee received a copy of the February Recreation Director’s Report to read. R. Adams highlighted the two free adult computer classes that the Recreation Department held at the Lothrop School computer lab in January. The Recreation Director noted he was pleased with the 13 people who signed up in each class, because in the past the Recreation Department has offered very similar programs with little interest. R. Adams also went on talk about the Valentines Teen Dance that was held on Friday, February 10. He was pleased to report that even though there was a varsity boys basketball @ Otter Valley going on at the same time that 188 teens in grades 7-10 attended this event held the VT Police Academy.
Playground Sign @ the Recreation Area
R. Adams had a “sample” sign printed by Winning Image Graphix on display to show the committee exactly what the sign would look & read like when finished.
M. Cioffredi made the motion to accept the sign as read and have R. Adams go forward with having the sign completed.
K. Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Ice Rink Ideas for the Select Board
R. Adams wanted to make the Recreation Committee aware of this request again, but also added that the Recreation Committee should consider the committee’s view of expanding the usage of the Recreation Area during the winter months as it may play a factor to a final location of an ice rink.
Pittsford Day Celebration Sunday, July 2, 2006
The Recreation Director informed the Recreation Committee when the 2006 Pittsford Day Celebration had been scheduled for. R. Adams invited members to attend the next Pittsford Day Committee meeting in March if they would like to get involved with the planning.
Spring Brochure 2006
As part of their meeting packet the Recreation Committee received a copy of the “just finished” Recreation Department’s 2006 Spring Brochure. R. Adams noted that this was first spring brochure he has created because in the past at this time a year he’d be too busy with his varsity baseball team. R. Adams highlighted the CPR & First Aid Class that the Recreation Department is offering in March. He also noted other programs like the Family Mardi Gras Party that was being cosponsored by the Marble Valley Grange of Pittsford, along with Gymnastics program and the Fishing Derby.
R. Adams reported on the major programs that he is beginning to put together for the summer of 2006. The Red Cross Swimming Program and the Summer Day Camp will be the most prominent programs. R. Adams discussed a meeting that he had in January with M. Voutas, Lothrop School Principal concerning usage of the Lothrop Gym this summer. M. Voutas informed R. Adams that there was an outside, meaning not affiliated with Lothrop School, drama group that would like to use the stage in the gym while the Day Camp is in session, and the School Directors wanted to see the Recreation Department accommodate this request because the Recreation Department had already reserved the space. R. Adams wanted it known that even though he did not personally believe that a non-school program that was being operated for profit, and is going to be open to non-Pittsford residents should be allowed to push out a Recreation Department program, he made the compromise for the drama program, but before doing so he asked M. Voutas for another space, like the library or a large classroom, to be made available for Day
Summer Programs continued
Camp to use in lieu of the gym, which she agreed to. R. Adams also reported that he has secured the VT Police Academy gym as another backup indoor location that the Day Camp could use if needed. Other Summer Programs that the Recreation Department is planning are the Ice Cream Social, an outdoor screening of a movie at the Recreation Area, and a Summer Night Concert series.
M. Winslow informed the members of the committee that there is a small group of Lothrop School parents who are trying to revive the idea of building a new gymnasium. He stated that the group was in the beginning phases, but has made M. Voutas, Principal aware of their interests. M. Winslow stated that the group will formally approach the Pittsford School Board after Town Meeting after any new School Board members would be appointed. He urged the Recreation Committee and/or other individuals to become involved with the process. He thought the Recreation Department would have lots to gain if this gym became a reality. R. Adams mentioned that he has been questioned maybe four or five times by Pittsford parents this winter why the Lothrop School or the Recreation Department doesn’t use the VT Police Academy gym for any of its basketball programs. His stock response has been:1) it is a State owned property, not a Town facility and 2) there is exercise equipment and weight lifting equipment along one entire sideline of the court that makes the playing area very unsafe for youth basketball (there isn’t another location for this equipment). R. Adams mentioned that timing is a factor here in Pittsford with a project of this size that would be a potential bond vote. The US Route 7 upgrade projects are going to happen at some point and time and the Town will have plenty of expenses then for work like replacing water and sewer lines.
With no further business to discuss, Kathy Shortsleeves made the motion to adjourn the meeting.
Kathy Brown seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.
