Recreation Director’s Report

Recreation Director’s Report
January 12, 2016

On Friday, 12/18/15, the Pittsford Recreation Department & Brandon Recreation Departments co-sponsored our annual Winter Freeze Teen Dance at the VT Police Academy. Only 21 teens in grades 7-10 participated in this event. Unsure why we had such a low turnout other than school vacation began that day and kids just weren’t interested in attending. There was also an OV varsity boys game in Proctor too that pulled students away. I’d like to thank Sue Danforth, Melanie Laraway and Darlene Kelly the parent chaperones, who volunteered to take time out of their holiday schedules to help us keep a close watch on everyone. I’d also like to extend a “special thank you” to Kathy Shortsleeves who operated the concession stand. I’m thankful, as were the teens, for the services they provided to the event. The kids look forward to seeing Mrs. Shortsleeves every time. The next and final teen dance is scheduled for Friday, March 18, 2016 at the VT Police Academy in Pittsford.

Youth Basketball practices started the first week of December for grades 3rd and up. The 3/4 boys team has 15 players and is coached by Carlo Falco. The 3/4 girls has 8 players and are coached by Kim Keith. The Lothrop 5/6 boys team has 15 players and is being coached by Dick Williams. The 5/6 girls has 17 players. They’ve been split into two teams, however they all still practice together. They’re being coached by Tammi Blanchard and Nate McKay. Teams practiced the entire month of December and games started 1/5/16. The coed 1st/2nd grade group began its six week program on Saturday, 1/2/16. The Recreation Department has 22 players at this youngest group. They’re coached by myself and parent helpers. Thank you to Rob Warrell for getting to the Lothrop Gym early to help put our youth basketball hoops up. It has been great to be working with this age group, the kids are very eager to learn. Overall we have 77 kids playing basketball this winter.

On Thursday, December 17, 2015 (usually takes place on the 4th Thursday of the month), “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 53 seniors pre-registered and took advantage of the program. Chef Bob did an outstanding job preparing the roast beef & twice baked potatoes. For the fifth year in row a class from Lothrop School visited to sing Christmas carols to the seniors while they ate their lunches. Up until 2013 the 3rd grade classes used to visit, this year the entire 1st grade visited. I’d like to pass on my sincerest thank you to Mr. Kevin Duggan’s & Mrs. Jane Pinson’s first grade classes, 28 total students, for attending the Pittsford Seniors Luncheon. Thank you to Lothrop’s new music teacher, Ms. Mader for continuing this legacy. They all did a marvelous job getting their students prepared during one of the busiest times of year. The Sr. Luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($5.00 for people 60 years old and older & $6.00 for everyone else) and an opportunity to get out and socialize with neighbors and friends. At this time there are 55 preregistered for the luncheon scheduled for Thursday, January 21, 2016 @ 1:00 pm.

Typically over the Christmas Break the Recreation Department cosponsored a Winter Basketball Camp @ OV. But because the way Christmas fell this year we didn’t do it yet. Otter Community Youth (Brandon Recreation Department, Pittsford Recreation Department and OV) sponsors an annual Winter Basketball Clinic. This is a free clinic for all 1st-6th graders. Otter Valley varsity coaches and their players do the actual instruction of fundamental drills. Kids learn about respect, sportsmanship and the value of working hard. We hope to sponsor this later in the winter, maybe over Winter Recess in February 2016.

On Friday, January 8, 2016, at the VT Police Academy, Maclure Library and the Recreation Department cosponsored the first of three Family Fun Nights to be held this winter. The theme for this particular event was “Star Wars Lands in Pittsford” with approximately 83 people attending. The Maclure Library provided theme based arts & craft projects that children and their parents enjoyed constructing together, while the Recreation Department provided many games, blocks, & other physical activities for the kids to play with. The next two events are scheduled for Friday nights, February 5, 2016, and March 4, 2016 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Themes TBA,

The Brandon and Pittsford Recreation Departments are cosponsored a bus trip on Friday, December 11, 2015, to watch the Boston Celtics play against the Golden State Warriors at the TD Garden in Boston, MA. Approximately 50 people headed on Premier Tour bus to enjoy the game.

I’m beginning to work on the details of the School Break Fun Day. On Wednesday, February 17, 2016 during the Lothrop School Winter Recess the Recreation Department is sponsoring a School Break Fun Day. In the morning the group will go to the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. After lunch the group will go swimming at the VAC Mitchell Therapy Pool. There is a minimum of twenty participants and a maximum of 30. I’m still looking for staff, usually the Recreation Department sends three paid staff on the trip. There will also be a handful of middle school aged students who will help belay and assist the staff keep an eye on all the participants.

A “Safe Sitter” babysitter class is being organized to be held in the Lothrop Cafeteria late March or early April. This interactive program is for 11-13 year old students interested in becoming a “Safe Sitter” babysitter. Participants learn about child care essentials, injury prevention & management and how to care for choking kids.
