RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT
R. Adams presented the January Recreation Director’s to the committee. The Recreation Director also passed around a photo of the new grill that Highway Foreman Shawn Erickson and his highway crew custom built a new grill that is located on the south end of the picnic pavilion at the Recreation Area to replace the old one. The new one matches what was there before- 48” L x 18” D x 8” H anchored in the ground by two Pedestals, (recycled basketball posts from the Recreation Area). Thank you.

R. Ketcham reported that he would be contacting Gawet Marble soon about the memorial bench the Recreation Department is working on.
5k Trail Run (Kelly Connaughton)
K. Connaughton discussed the Pittsford Trail Run – 5k and 1 mile scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2016. She stated that she is in the process mapping the actual routes. She handed out to the Recreation Committee copies of a program checklist with a map of a “possible 5k route”. She will report to the Recreation Committee the route when chosen. The races will start and end at the Recreation Area. The restrooms at the Recreation Area should be open in time. Recreation Director will make sure a port-a-let is available for event. The Recreation Director will keep the Town Manager up to date on it.
Winter Programs Youth Basketball
Youth Basketball practices started the first week of December for grades 3rd and up. The 3/4 boys team has 15 players and is coached by Carlo Falco. The 3/4 girls team has 8 players and are coached by Kim Keith. The Lothrop 5/6 boys team has 15 players and is being coached by Dick Williams. The 5/6 girls has 17 players. They have been split into two teams, however they all still practice together as one group. They’re coached by Tammi Blanchard and Nate McKay. Teams practiced the entire month of December and games started 1/5/16. The coed 1st/2nd grade group began its six week program on Saturday, 1/2/16. Thank you to Rob Warrell for getting to the Lothrop Gym early to help put up our youth basketball hoops. It has been great to be working with this age group, the kids are very eager to learn. Overall, we have 77 kids playing basketball this winter.
Teen Dance, Friday, 12/18/15
On Friday, 12/18/15, the Pittsford Recreation Department & Brandon Recreation Departments co-sponsored our annual Winter Freeze Teen Dance at the VT Police Academy. Only 21 teens in grades 7-10 participated in this event. We are unsure why we had such a low turnout other than school vacation began that day and perhaps the kids just weren’t interested in attending. There was also an OV varsity boys basketball game in Proctor too that pulled students away. I’d like to thank Sue Danforth, Melanie Laraway and Darlene Kelly the parent chaperones, who volunteered to take time out of their holiday schedules to help us keep a close watch on everyone. I’d also like to extend a “special thank you” to Kathy Shortsleeves who operated the concession stand. I’m thankful, as were the teens, for the services they provided to the event. The kids look forward to seeing Mrs. Shortsleeves every time. The next and final teen dance is scheduled for Friday, March 18, 2016 at the VT Police Academy in Pittsford.
Family Fun Nights
On Friday, January 8, 2016, at the VT Police Academy, Maclure Library and the Recreation Department cosponsored the first of three Family Fun Nights to be held this winter. The theme for this particular event was “Star Wars Lands in Pittsford” with approximately 83 people attending. The Maclure Library provided theme based arts & craft projects that children and their parents enjoyed constructing together, while the Recreation Department provided many games, blocks, & other physical activities for the kids to play with. The next two events are scheduled for Friday nights, February 5, 2016, and March 4, 2016, 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Themes TBA!
NEW BUSINESS
Fund Raisers
During the winter of 2015 the Recreation Department sponsored the first annual Pittsford Ice Out Competition! A Scarecrow dressed up as a Pittsford youth baseball player fell through the ice on the pond in front of the New England Maple Museum on Friday, April 3 at 1:45:05 pm. The Winner was Joyce Robinson with her guess of 1:40 pm. The winner received a check in the amount of $527.50. The Recreation Director would like to thank Mike and his entire family, for their help and support with the fundraiser. The Recreation Department will being doing the Ice Out Completion in 2016. The Recreation Director passed out copies of the Adaptive Martial Arts Association’s “Million Kicks/Moves Fundraiser Flyers” to each member of the Recreation Committee present. These forms are from Jason Davis in case the Recreation Department needs them. The Recreation Director reminded it was Jason Davis, who found the Adaptive Martial Arts Association and who did such great job organizing the 1st annual 5k and fun run the morning of Pittsford Day 2015 that the Recreation Department helped cosponsor.
All Other Business
The Recreation Director reported that the Kubota tractor that is used at the Recreation Area to mow and maintain the area with needs a new Loader Frame and the Mid Frame need to be replaced. These parts have excessive wear in the mower mounting points. Towline Equipment has estimated a cost of $4500 for parts and labor to make these repairs. The tractor was purchased new from Giddings Equipment in August 2006.
With no further business to discuss K. Shortsleeves made the motion to adjourn the meeting.
