Meeting was called to order by Rob Ketcham at 6:30 pm. Members of the Recreation Committee who were present include Bill Crossmon, Jenny Parker, Mark Poljacik, Kathy Shortsleeves and John White.
Recreation Director Randy Adams was also present.
Recreation Committee member Mark Winslow was not present.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
The minutes of January 14, 2015 were read and accepted. J. Parker made the motion to accept the minutes as read.
- Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT
- Adams presented a verbal Recreation Director’s Report to the committee.
OLD BUSINESS
Safe Routes to School (walkers & bikers)
The Recreation Department will be sponsoring a bike safety event on Saturday, April 24, 2015 at 11:00 am to correlate with International Bike to School Day Wednesday, May 6, 2015. The Recreation Director has met with Pittsford Police Chief M. Warfle about cosponsoring this event and he was all for it.
Shootout Competition Date
- Crossmon spoke about his idea to hold the Shootout Competition outside at the Recreation Area as a way to “showcase” the basketball court and the new baskets that were recently installed. Various dates were talked about it was decided that the Shootout Competition will be held during the Recreation Area Open House on June 20, 2015.
Budget FY 2015/16
The Select Board is still working on the Budget for FY 2015/16 for the Town of Pittsford. Town Meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 2, 2015 at 6:30 pm in the Lothrop Gym. General Election is Tuesday, March 3, 2015, with voting hours 7:00 am – 7:00 pm in the Lothrop Gym.
Winter Programs
The Recreation Department has cosponsored a FREE winter basketball camp at OV over the December School Break in December 2014. Youth basketball for grades 1st & 2nd grade ran Saturday mornings 9:00 – 10:00 am January 3 – February 7, 2015. The weekly Aerobic-Workout program started up again, after December rest, on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. The three 2015 Family Fun Nights at the VT Police Academy are scheduled for January 9, February 6, and March 6. On Friday, January 16, 2015, the Recreation Department cosponsored a bus trip with the Brandon Recreation Department to Boston to watch the Boston Celtics take on the Chicago Bulls at the TD Garden. The School Break Fun Day was February 18, 2015.
Ice out Competition (Looking for a coordinator from Recreation Committee)
The Recreation Director is seeking a volunteer to lead a fund raising effort taking place this winter. He is also looking for someone to assist with entering all the guesses on a spreadsheet.
Recreation Area Recycle Containers
The Recreation Director reminded the Recreation Committee a Boy Scout who is looking for a community based project as a way to earn his “Eagle Scout Badge” who had asked Recreation Director about installing, in some way, recycling containers for the Recreation Area late last fall. Recreation Committee briefly discussed possible locations such as on the Disc Golf Course, swim area and pavilion. The Recreation Committee did say that it should be look appropriate for the Recreation Area. Boy Scout Joshua Williams presented his plans to the Recreation Committee. The Recreation Committee was very happy with his proposal. Kathy Shortsleeves made the motion that the Recreation Committee give the okay to move forward with these recycling container at the Recreation Area.
- Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Family Fun Night
The third and final Family Fun Night “Run Away to the Circus” of the year is scheduled for Friday, March 6, 2015, 6:30-8:00 pm in gym at the VT Police Academy. The Recreation Director stated that he was looking for help that night to assist with the two bounce houses.
NEW BUSINESS
Spring Programs
The Learn to ski/snowboard program at the Middlebury Snow Bowl will take place on Sunday mornings, March 1, 8, 15 & 24. The Safe Sitter Baby Sitting Program is scheduled to run in the Lothrop Cafeteria March 21 & March 28, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm each day. The Recreation Director has mailed out Sponsorship Letters to various companies, groups and associations. 2015 Youth Baseball and Softball registration runs March 2 – 31. Practices begin the week of April 20, 2015. Games begin two weeks later.
Youth Softball Changes
The annual youth softball meeting took place on February 11, 2015 at the Rutland Rec. A major change this year is that girls who are sixth in grade will now be able to play with the Minors in spring. Before these girls had to wait and play in the summer on the Major teams. This was a huge disadvantage to ALL the sixth graders because they were being mixed in with the 7th – 8th graders who just played an entire Middle School season. The sixth graders would not have played anything since the spring before. Sixth graders will also be able to play in the summer too This allows the sixth graders two separate seasons to participate.
Tree’s at Recreation Area
The Recreation Director mentioned that John Haverstock meant at the Recreation Area on January 23, 2015 to look at more trees to be planted along the Sugar Hollow Brook.
Recreation Area Open House Date
Saturday, June 20, 2015 will be the second annual Open House at the Recreation Area.
Town Wide Yard Sale Date
Saturday, June 27, 2015 has been scheduled as the annual Yard Sale date.
All Other Business
With no further business to discuss, M. Poljacik made the motion to adjourn the meeting.
- Crossmon seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 7:05 pm.
