Recreation Director’s Report

January 14, 2015

On Friday, 12/5/14, the Pittsford Recreation Department & Brandon Recreation Departments co-sponsored our annual Winter Freeze Teen Dance at the VT Police Academy. 60+ teens in grades 7-10 participated in this event. We had to grab chaperones as parents dropped off their kids. I’d like to thank Tassie Boudreau and Sue Danforth, the parent chaperones, who volunteered to take time out of their holiday schedules to help us keep a close watch on everyone. I’d also like to extend a “special thank you” to Kathy Shortsleeves who operated the concession stand. I’m thankful, as were the teens, for the services they provided to the event. The kids look forward seeing Mrs. Shortsleeves every time. The next teen dance is scheduled for Friday, March 13, 2015 at the VT Police Academy in Pittsford. The fourth and final dance of the school year is scheduled Friday, May 29, 2015 at the Brandon Town Hall.

Youth Basketball Practices started the first week of December for grades 3rd and up. The 3/4 boys team has 16 players and is coached by Carlo Falco. The 3/4 girls has 8 players and are coached by Tammi Blanchard and Nate McKay. The Lothrop 5/6 boys team has 9 players and is being coached by Dick Williams and assisted by Adam Parker. The 5/6 girls has 13 players and is being coached by Kim Keith. Teams practiced the entire month of December and games started 1/2/15. The coed 1st/2nd grade group began its six week program on Saturday, 1/3/15. The Recreation Department has 13 players at this youngest group. They’re coached by Melissa and Jason Tripp. They do a fine job working with this age group, the kids are very eager to learn. Overall we have 59 kids playing basketball this winter.

On Thursday, December 18 (usually takes place on the 4th Thursday of the month), “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 47 seniors pre-registered and took advantage of the program. Chef Bob did an outstanding job preparing the roast beef & twice baked potatoes. For the fifth year in row a class from Lothrop School visited to sing Christmas carols to the seniors while they ate their lunches. Up to this year the 3rd grade would visit, this year the entire 1st grade visited. I’d like to pass on my sincerest thank you to Mr. Kevin Duggan’s & Mrs. Jane Pinson’s first grade classes, 28 total students, for attending the Pittsford Seniors Luncheon. Thank you to Lothrop’s music teacher, Ms. Samantha Funk, for continuing this legacy. They all did a marvelous job getting their students prepared during one of the busiest times of year. The Sr. Luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($5.00 for people 60 years old and older & $6.00 for everyone else) and an opportunity to get out and socialize with neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2015 @ 1:00 pm.

Over the Christmas Break the Recreation Department cosponsored a Winter Basketball Camp @ OV. Otter Community Youth (Brandon Recreation Department, Pittsford Recreation Department and OV) sponsored the 3rd annual Winter Basketball Clinic. This is a free clinic for all 1st-6th graders. Otter Valley varsity coaches and their players do the actual instruction of fundamental drills. Kids learn about respect, sportsmanship and the value of working hard. Our Otter Community Youth Basketball Clinic got great numbers from the Pittsford Recreation Department.  We had 12 kids who registered in the 1st – 3rd grade clinic. In the older group we had 21 kids which totaled 43 for the entire program!

On Friday, January 9, 2015, at the VT Police Academy, Maclure Library and the Recreation Department cosponsored the first of three Family Fun Nights to be held this winter. The theme for this particular event was “Under the Sea” with approximately 93 people attending. . The Maclure Library provided theme based arts & craft projects that children and their parents enjoyed constructing together, while the Recreation Department provided many games, blocks, & other physical activities for the kids to play with. The next two events are scheduled for Friday nights, February 6, Frozen in VT and March 6, TBA, 2015 6:30 – 8:00 pm.

The Brandon and Pittsford Recreation Departments are cosponsoring a bus trip on Friday, January 16, to the watch the Boston Celtics play against the Chicago Bulls at the TD Garden in Boston, MA. Approximately 50 headed on Premier Tour bus to enjoy the game.

On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 during the Lothrop School Winter Recess the Recreation Department is sponsoring a School Break Fun Day. In the morning the group will go to the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. After lunch the group will go swimming at the VAC Mitchell Therapy Pool. There is a minimum of twenty participants and a maximum of 30. I’m still looking for staff, usually the Recreation Department sends three paid staff on the trip. There will also be a handful of middle school aged students who will help belay and assist the staff keep an eye on all the participants.
