Recreation Director’s Report

Recreation Director’s Report October 10, 2014
The Recreation Department would like to thank the Town Highway Crew for their help last month installing the new basketball poles, backboards, & hoops. They look great. At the same time the Highway Crew made a lager parking lot on the upper field for our senior citizens who have trouble walking up to the fields to watch their grandchildren play. We used “boulders” that had been removed from the Kendrick Dam this summer and placed them as the perimeter along the driveway and the upper parking lot.
The Recreation Department is happy to announce that the trip to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the world famous Rockettes in New York City on Saturday, November 15, 2014 that we’re cosponsoring with the Brandon Recreation Department, has SOLD OUT, including 15 people who don’t have show tickets. These people will be sightseeing on their own. There are only forty tickets to see the 1:00 pm show. Transportation will be provided by Richard’s Limousine Service based in Elmore, VT. Thank you to Kathy Shortsleeves for all her work promoting this trip.
The Recreation Department is hosting our 4th annual disc golf tournament at the Pittsford Recreation Area Public Disc Golf Course on Saturday, October 25. In 2012 proceeds from this event went to the OV Varsity Baseball Field Improvements & Upgrades. In 2014 the money raised will go towards the course maintenance needs. The fee to enter is just $10 per person, two-person teams and singles (who will be paired up with someone) are welcome to register. The event begins at 9:00 am with a Shot Gun Start.
The Saturday morning Youth Soccer runs September 6– October 11, a full six weeks now. Over 82 children 4 years old – 6th grade are participating. Participants numbers are even the past two years (82/2013, 88/2012, 94/2011, 112/2010, 110/2009, 92/2008, 98/2007, 93/2006, & 90/2005). Mr. Dick Williams, the former Otter Valley Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, and his own kids are assisting me again with the actual on-field instruction of the 4 & 5 year olds and the 1st& 2nd graders. Games for the U12 GIRLS 5th/6th grade team is sponsored by the Lothrop Elementary School. Practices typically begin the first week of September. We had to start a week earlier because both the Lothrop and Recreation Department teams played in the Rutland Rec. Dept. League this fall. This was done as a way to ensure an adequate number of age appropriate games could be found. Over the past few years it was becoming more difficult to find games for all our teams. This season Lothrop didn’t have enough interested at the U12 5/6 grade boys level. Only 5 boys registered, they needed 8 to play. Usually the boys & girls have their separate teams. For the second year in a row the Lothrop enrollment is below 200 students at 195. In 1999 Lothrop had 282 students in 2001 it had 255 students. At Lothrop right now there is only a single 6th grade classroom this year. All the other grades have two classrooms.
On Thursday, September 25, “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 48 people pre-registered for the September meal. The monthly luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($5.00 donation for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) but also so they can get out of their daily routine and see neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 23 @ 1:00 pm. The menu for that meal is Apple Braised Pork with vegetables, fried rice, and Macaroon cupcakes.
On Friday, September 26, 2014 the Pittsford Recreation & Brandon Recreation Departments co-sponsored our first of four Teen Dances during the 2014/2015 school year. For only the third time in program history it was held at the Brandon Town Hall. Over 94 teens in grades 7-10 participated. There was also a surprise birthday party at the Recreation Area at the same time and I’m sure the party pulled kids from the dance. The next teen dance is scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2014 and will be at the VT Police Academy. We are looking for volunteer chaperones to help out. Anyone interested should contact the Pittsford or Brandon Recreation Departments.
On Sunday, October 12, 2014, 11:00 – 4:00 pm the Pittsford Recreation Area host the Pittsford Sheep Festival. This will be their 21st Anniversary and we’re pleased that they wanted to hold it at the Recreation Area. Admission is free. The festival features a number of sheep and wool products and activities. A variety of sheep breeds will be on display, and sheep shearing demonstrations will be held in the afternoon. There will be crafts for the kids, food, & live music.
The annual Pittsford Pumpkin Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 at the Recreation Area 10-11:30 am. This event is co-sponsored by the Maclure Library. Wagon Rides, snacks, and of course, decorating pumpkins are all highlights for the event. In 2007 140 people attended, in 2008-200, 2009-100, 2010-125, 2011-250. 2012-300 and last year we had over 200 people who attended.
On Saturday, October 25, 2014 the Recreation Department is hosting our fourth annual tournament. Details of the event and registration forms can be found on the Town of Pittsford website and Facebook.
For the second year the Recreation Department will be cosponsoring with the Brandon Recreation Department an “open gym” basketball program that will allow kids to get to know other kids from Neshobe and Lothrop Schools. On November 3, 4, 10 and 11 kids in grades 3rd-6th will go to the OV Gym for some light instruction, and then pickup basketball games. This is meant to be a nice transition for families as soccer ends in mid-October and the basketball begins in December.
On Saturday, November 22, 2014, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Lothrop Gym the Recreation Department is sponsoring the annual Holiday Craft Sale. There will be many unique items for folks to purchase and an annual basket raffle to benefit “Pittsford Christmas for Kids”. In 2013 they donated $852 to the Pittsford Christmas for kids formally known as Santa Fund (2012/$1140.75, 2011/$848, 2010/$208).
