Recreation Director’s Report

September 9, 2014
The Recreation Department will be sending a group of 20 Pittsford Seniors on a trip to the Thompson Senior Center in Woodstock, VT on Tuesday, September 16 for a special outing. On Thursday, August 28, 2014 the Recreation Department & the Pittsford Seniors hosted our monthly luncheon at the Vermont Police Academy. Thirty-three seniors from the local community attended the luncheon. August marked the 7th year anniversary of this popular program. In the past year the program averaged over 44.3 people per month. This compares to 44/2007-2008, 41/2008-2009, 45/2009/2010, 47/2010-2011, 47/2011-2012, and 44/2013. Wonderful food, good conversation and great support from the Vermont Police Academy helps this program prosper year after year. Each meal is made from scratch by Chef Bob and his assistants, the same crew that prepares & cooks the meals for the Academy.
The fourth and final summer sports camp the Recreation Department ran was the “Pre-season Soccer Camp” for boys and girls entering 3rd-8th grade, August 18, 19, & 20 at the Pittsford Recreation Area. We had 22 kids participate this year. Otter Valley Middle School Girls Head Coach ran the camp along with former OV players, and myself. Kids from the R.N.E.S.U. & surrounding areas like Chittenden and Proctor were involved. I feel the timing was perfect for players who wanted an early start to their fall soccer season by practicing proper soccer techniques in a controlled environment. This is the fourth year in row the Recreation Department sponsored this program.
Thanks to the efforts of Terry Poor and Tony Freson the Recreation Department has 18 holes of disc golf.. The Recreation Area continues to see an entire new group of clientele that the Recreation Department wasn’t reaching before. On Saturday, October 25, 2014 the Recreation Department is hosting our fourth annual tournament. Details of the event and registration forms can be found on the Town of Pittsford website.
This fall the Recreation Department is offering our annual Hunter Safety Course. Pittsford resident, Mr. Rick Hedding, is the instructor for this class. He enjoys teaching his students knowledge & skills that most of them will retain and use for the rest of their lives. This is the 10th year he has taught this program for the Recreation Department. Mr. Hedding works for the State of VT Parks and is also a State of VT Deputy Game Warden.
The Youth Soccer Program kicked off another Saturday morning season on Saturday, September 6. Over 80 children 4 years old – 6th grade are participating. Participants numbers are down only slightly (82/2013, 88/2012, 94/2011, 112/2010, 110/2009, 92/2008, 98/2007, 93/2006, & 90/2005). These aren’t bad numbers considering we did not have enough kids registered to play U12 Boys soccer. This is the tenth year that Dick Williams, the former Otter Valley Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, and his own kids are assisting me with the actual on-field instruction of the 4 & 5 year olds and the 1st& 2nd graders.
Changes in the soccer program this year include the U10 & U12 teams are playing in the Rutland Recreation League. U10 play 6 v 6 and U12 plays 8 v 8. Most of these games take place at the Polo Fields in Rutland Town on Saturday afternoons. The 5th/6th grade teams are sponsored by the Lothrop Elementary School and practices typically begin the first week of September. This season Lothrop has only one coed 5th/6th grade soccer team made up of 17 players (13 girls & 4 boys).
The Recreation Department is co-sponsoring a Fall Teen Dance with the Brandon Recreation Department on Friday, September, 26, 2014 at the Brandon Town Hall, 7-10 pm. To split up the work load more evenly Bill Moore, the Brandon Recreation Director and I wanted to host some teen events in Brandon. You might remember in May 2013 we held our first teen dance at the Brandon Town Hall. Things ran rather smoothly, especially being our first time in the new venue. In the past teen dances always have been held at the VT Police Academy. The Brandon Town Hall doesn’t have heat so any teen nights we schedule will need to be done during the warmer months of the school. This is why our fall and spring dances will be at the Brandon Town Hall. The two teen dances during the winter are December 5, 2014 and Friday, March 13, 2015 scheduled to take place at the VT Police Academy.
