Recreation Director’s Report

August 11, 2014
The Red Cross Swim Program is still one of the most popular programs that the Recreation Department offers. The Recreation Department offered three 2-week sessions of swimming lessons. Kayla Desabrais, Matt Dier & Jonna Keith and staff should be recognized for the outstanding work they did this summer. 2014 they set a new record of 162 kids registered for swim lessons! In 2013 they had a total of 158 kids registered. In comparison we had 152 kids in 2012, 114 kids in 2011, 103 in 2010, 97 in 2009, 75 in 2008, 92 in 2007, and 102 in 2006. I would like to thank Kayla (Gallipo) Desabrais for her outstanding job performance as a swim instructor and as the Lifeguard Supervisor. Kayla was first hired in 2005 as a lifeguard, was a certified Red Cross Swim Lesson instructor a few years later, and since summer of 2008 has been the Swim Area Supervisor. The Recreation department receives many compliments for the work she does. The kids she teaches love her, the parents like her, and the other swim instructors and lifeguards look up to her. I wish her luck this fall when returns to her very own mutli-age class of 2nd-3rd graders in Sudbury, VT.
The summer Day Camp is another cornerstone program that families look forward to each summer. I’m happy report that new Day Camp Director Susan Markowski did a super job for the Recreation Department and all the families who signed their kids up. Mrs. Markowski did a great job preparing for camp. She brought in many new and different activities that kept it fun. I heard from some parents who She is a great role model for the counselors, Andy Levandowski, Cortney and Kelsey Poljacik that worked this summer. 156 participants attended this six week program, that’s an average of 26 kids per week. Thank you very much to Lothrop School for allowing the Pittsford Recreation Department to host the Summer Camp at school. Without Lothrop’s continued support it would be difficult to offer the same quality program that our parents are used. Thank you to Tom Culvert for all his help on a daily basis. He can be counted on to help out when needed.
The Recreation Department offered a total of four sport camps this summer Tennis, Field Hockey, Basketball, and Pre-season Soccer is scheduled for 8/18-8/20 5:00 – 8:00 pm. The “Learn to Love Tennis” Camp expanded in 2013from just a beginner program last summer to three separate sessions this summer a beginner, an indeterminate, and an adult class. The tennis program is taught by Suzanne Wood..
The third annual Summer Basketball Camp was held at the OV we had 30 participants in 2014. The Brandon & Pittsford Recreation departments in conjunction with Otter Valley Union High School ran a 4-day Otter Community Youth basketball clinic. A hearty Thank You goes out to OV Athletic Director/ Girls Varsity Coach Steven Keith, OV Boys Varsity Coach Greg Hughes, OV Celtics AAU director Bill Crossmon, Middle School Coach Kristen Schaffer, Athletic Trainer, OV Alum Ryan Kelly, Brandon Rec Coach Ben Gaboriault, and the many JV and Varsity Players that volunteered their time to the 30 camp attendees. Successful collaborations like these are a testimony to community minded people that live here in our towns.
OV Varsity Girls Coach Steven Keith along with OV Varsity Boys Coach Greg Hughes and other area coaches and present players ran the camp. Players worked on their fundamentals while having fun. Thank you to the Brandon Recreation Department for their help and support.
The fourth and final summer sports camp the Recreation Department will offer will be the “Pre-season Soccer Camp” scheduled to place August 18-20 at the Pittsford Recreation Area for boys and girls entering 3rd-8th grade. Otter Valley Middle School Girls Head Coach will run the camp along with former OV players. Kids from the R.N.E.S.U. & surrounding areas such as Chittenden and Proctor who want to practice proper soccer techniques in a controlled atmosphere are encouraged to participate. This is the third time Mr. White and the Pittsford Recreation Department will run this program.
