Recreation Director’s Report

Recreation Director’s Report

January 14, 2014

On Friday, December 6, 2013 the Pittsford Recreation Department & Brandon Recreation Departments co-sponsored our annual Winter Freeze Teen Dance at the VT Police Academy. 105 teens in grades 7-10 participated in this event. I’d like to thank the parent chaperones who volunteered to take time out of their hectic schedules to help us keep a close watch on everything. Thank you to Sue Danforth, Melanie Laraway, and Devon Fuller (Brandon Select Board Chairman). I’d also like to extend a “special thank you” to Melissa Brown and Kathy Shortsleeves who operated the concession stand. I’m thankful, as were the teens, for the services they provided to the event. The kids look forward to seeing Mrs. Shortsleeves. The next teen dance is scheduled for Friday, March 14, 2014.

On Thursday, December 19 (usually takes place on the 4th Thursday of the month), “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 53 seniors pre-registered and took advantage of the program. Chef Bob did an outstanding job preparing the roast beef & twice baked potatoes. For the fourth year in row a 3rd grade class from Lothrop School visited to sing Christmas carols to the seniors while they ate their lunches. I’d like to pass on my sincerest thank you to Mr. Kevin Duggan’s third grade class for attending the Pittsford Seniors Luncheon. For Mr. Duggan along with Lothrop’s new music teacher, Ms. Samantha Funk, they easily could see the importance of this program and continuing the legacy. They did a marvelous job getting their students prepared during one of the busiest times of year. The Sr. Luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.50 for people 60 years old and older & $6.00 for everyone else) and an opportunity to get out and socialize with neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 2014 @ 1:00 pm.

Over the Christmas Break the Recreation Department sponsored many different basketball programs i.e.- The Pittsford Rec Shootout, Winter Basketball Camp @ OV, a bus trip on New Year’s Eve to the Boston Celtics. Not to mention in November the Recreation Department cosponsored with the Brandon Recreation Department a basketball program that allowed kids to get to know other kids from Neshobe and Lothrop Schools. Our Otter Community Youth Basketball Clinic exceeded all our expectations.  We had 56 kids who registered in the 1st – 3rd grade clinic. In the older group we had 43 kids which totaled 99 KIDS for the entire program!

On Friday, 12/27 the Pittsford Recreation Department held the fourth annual Shootout Event at the Lothrop Gym. The first three years the Lothrop PTO sponsored the event. Each year the event has grown. The 2013 event was the first year the Recreation Department took it over. This competition was a childhood dream of Bill Crossmon’s as a way to get the youth in our community and their families excited about basketball in a low pressure, high energy event that sends everyone home a buzzing with excitement. There are divisions for every age group (K-6) as well as an adult division too so kids can smile and laugh while watching their teacher or parent/guardian shoot. This year nearly 40 kids participated and each and every one of them went home with their very own basketball. People packed into the Lothrop gym to watch their kids, grandkids, etc… have their 45 seconds of fame. It was so satisfying to watch the kids cheer on their classmates and friends.

On Friday, January 10, 2014, at the VT Police Academy, Maclure Library and the Recreation Department cosponsored the first of three Family Fun Nights to be held this winter. The theme for this particular event was “Winter Wonderland” with approximately 62 people attending. . The Maclure Library provided theme based arts & craft projects that children and their parents enjoyed constructing together, while the Recreation Department provided many games, blocks, & other physical activities for the kids to play with.
