RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT
R. Adams presented his October Recreation Director’s Report to the committee.
OLD BUSINESS
Welcome Sign @ the Recreation Area
The Recreation Department will be working towards installing a Welcome Sign on Recreation Road that clearly displays all the things the area has to offer. The Recreation Director will work on a list of these items and discuss with the Recreation Committee.
Fall Programs
The Recreation Department plans to offer Women’s basketball at the VT Police Academy, youth soccer, aerobics/kickboxing, a four-week adult tennis clinic, Hunter Education, a teen dance at the Brandon Town Hall, Men’s basketball @ Lothrop, the annual Disc Golf Tournament and the Pumpkin Party are scheduled for 10/26 at the Recreation Area. The Recreation Department is cosponsoring a bus trip to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular on Saturday, 11/16 with the Brandon Recreation Department. The very next week will be the Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday, 11/23.
Basketball Shoot Out Event
The Recreation Department will be sponsoring the “Shoot Out Competition” for the first time. B. Crossmon, Carlo Falco, and Lothrop PTO ran this annual event for the past three years in the Lothrop Gym. It is a good way to get the youth and their families excited about basketball in a low pressure, high-energy event that sends everyone home buzzing with excitement. In February 2013 during the halftime of a varsity boys basketball game they ran the first annual Shoot out Exhibition between the Lothrop 5th/6th grade winners and the Brandon Recreation Department 5th/6th grade winners as a way to recognize the kids who had won in their own town events. The Pittsford Recreation Department was approached by B. Crossmon and Mr. Falco to take this program over in 2013 so that it can continue to grow. The Recreation Department is looking forward to sponsoring this event scheduled for Friday, December 27, 2013 at Lothrop.
Winter Programs
The Recreation Department is sponsoring Women’s Open Gym at the VT Police Academy, youth basketball, Men’s Open Gym at the Lothrop Gym, aerobics/kickboxing, two teen dances at the VT Police Academy, three Family Fun Nights, and the monthly Senior Luncheons at VT Police Academy. The Pittsford and Brandon Recreation Departments will also be sponsoring our Learn to Ski/Snowboard program in March at the Middlebury Snow Bowl.
Open House at the Recreation Area
The Open House idea was discussed at the August 13, 2013 Recreation Committee meeting. The Recreation Committee and the Recreation Director felt this would be a good way to have folks come to the Recreation Area to check out all the different things it has to offer. J. Parker suggested picking a date next year so that Recreation Department could begin the planning process. One date popular with the Recreation Committee present was Saturday, June 21, 2014, the first day of summer.
NEW BUSINESS
Jay Peak Pump House Indoor Waterpark, Saturday, March 22, 2014
The Pittsford and Brandon Recreation Departments will be cosponsoring a day trip to Jay Peak Pump House Indoor Water Park. “The Jay Peak Pump House indoor waterpark is a place for well-earned leisure. A place where you can surf, climb, float the Big River like a boss or sit out a rough day. A place where the movement of the water does more than keep you entertained. It actually moves you” according to their website. Transportation will be provided.
All Other Business
The Recreation Director indicated that new woodchips have been placed under the swing set at the Recreation Area thanks to a group of Furnace Brook Wesleyan Church volunteers. A letter of gratitude was set.
With no further business to discuss, K. Shortsleeves made the motion to adjourn the meeting.
M. Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
