Recreation Director’s Report

 October 9, 2012

The Recreation Department is hosting our 2nd annual disc golf tournament at the Pittsford Recreation Area Public Disc Golf Course on Saturday, October 20. Last year this event was part of Pittsford’s town wide effort to raise money for neighboring towns who were hit by “Storm Irene”. The 2012 proceeds from this event will go directly to the OV Varsity Baseball Field Improvements & Upgrades. The fee to enter is just $10 per person, two-person teams and singles (who will be paired up with someone) are welcome to register. The event begins at 9:00 am with a Shot Gun Start. Co-course creator Tony Freson and his friend David Boles were seen at the Recreation Area over the Columbus Day weekend sprucing up the course getting ready the big event.
Over the past couple months the Recreation Department, Town Clerk, the Town Manager, and the Town of Pittsford Selectmen all have been exceptional in helping secure the sum of $8,000 from the Dan Burditt Trust to be used on the OV Varsity Baseball Field Improvements. The Pittsford Board of Selectmen and the Directors of the School District had to unanimously request these funds before they would be released! Also the Town Clerk, Helen McKinlay, and I worked closely with the Varsity Baseball Head Coach Tim Mitchell, and Steven Keith, the “new” Activities Director at OV to apply for a Recreational Facilities Grant. We should know within the next four weeks or so if this project is awarded and funds. The Recreation Department uses this field every summer for Babe Ruth and these improvements will directly benefit our players.

The Saturday morning Youth Soccer program had a great fall. It runs September 8– October 13 a full six weeks now. It’s a wonderful sight for me to see all the kids out on the soccer field each Saturday running around having a good time. We had enough kids for two 3rd/4th teams. Mr. Dick Williams and I are coaching these kids. Our players have been concentrating on building individual skill sets and learning what it’s like to be part of a team, including rules and how they apply when out on the field playing. Games will end by the end of October. The 5th/6th grade teams are having a good year. The Lothrop girls should be proud of themselves. Their coaches are doing a fantastic job preparing the girls for the games and having them play as a team. Basketball is the next youth program. The 3rd-6th graders will begin practices in early December. The 1st/2nd graders won’t start until the first of the year.

On Thursday, September 27, “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 47 people pre-registered for the September meal. The monthly luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.50 donation for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) but also so they can get out of their daily routine and see neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 25 @ 1:00 pm. The menu for that meal is Apple Braised Pork with vegetables, fried rice, and Macaroon cupcakes.

On Friday, October 12, 2012 the Pittsford Recreation & Brandon Recreation Departments are co-sponsoring our first of four Teen Dances during the 2012/2013 school year at the VT Police Academy. Last year over 143 teens in grades 7-10 participated. We are looking for volunteer chaperones to help out. Anyone interested should contact the Pittsford or Brandon Recreation Departments.

The annual Pittsford Pumpkin Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 20 at the Recreation Area 10-11:30 am. This event is co-sponsored by the Maclure Library. Wagon Rides, fresh popped popcorn, and of course, decorating pumpkins are all highlights for the event. In 2007 140 people attended, in 2008-200, 2009-100, 2010-125, last year we had 250 people who attended.
