Recreation Director’s Report

October 10, 2011

The Recreation Department is hosting our inaugural disc golf tournament at the Pittsford Recreation Area Public Disc Golf Course on Saturday, October 22. This event is part of Pittsford’s town wide effort to raise money for neighboring towns who were hit much more adversely than Pittsford. Proceeds from this event will go directly to the Pittsford Fire Department’s “Irene Recovery Fund”. The fee to enter is $10 per person to enter, two-person teams and singles (who will be paired up with someone) are welcome to register. The event begins at 9:00 am with a Shot Gun Start. Co-course creator Tony Freson and his friend David Boles were seen at the Recreation Area over the Columbus Day weekend sprucing up the course getting ready the big event.

Our Saturday morning Youth Soccer program had a great fall. It ran September 3– October 1. The past two years we were able to get all five weeks of the program completed without a rainout. That almost happened again this year, but the 1st/2nd graders were rained out on the last week so we made up for them on the October 8. It’s a wonderful sight for me to see each Saturday all the kids out on the soccer field at 8:00am with the sun shining bright burning off the morning fog with them running around having a good time. The co-ed 3rd/4th team is having a good season. The coaches have reported that most of these players have learned a lot about team work. The 5th/6th grade teams wrap up their seasons with a parent/teacher vs players game on Thursday, October 20 at 3:30pm at Lothrop School. The kids really look forward to this game all season long. Basketball is the next youth program. The 3rd-6th graders will begin practices in early December. The 1st/2nd graders won’t start until the first of the year.

On Thursday, September 29, “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 55 people pre-registered for the September meal. The monthly luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.50 donation for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) but also so they can get out of their daily routine and see neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 27 @ 1:00 pm. The menu for that meal is Oriental Pork with vegetables, fried rice, and Macaroon cupcakes. The Pittsford Seniors are headed to the Paramount in Rutland again on Thursday, December 1st to see “Natalie MacMaster-Christmas in Cape Breton”. The Paramount’s website said that the N. MacMaster shows are known for the foot-tapping rave ups, heart-wrenching ballads, and the fiddling fireworks. Over 20 seniors have already registered to take part in this trip. Bet-cha Transportation has been chartered to provide transportation to and from the show. Pick and drop of is at the Town Offices.

On Friday, October 14, 2011 the Pittsford Recreation Department & Brandon Recreation Departments are co-sponsoring our annual Halloween Teen Dance at the VT Police Academy. Last year over 143 teens in grades 7-10 participated. We are looking for volunteer chaperones to help out. Anyone interested should contact the Pittsford or Brandon Recreation Departments.

The annual Pittsford Pumpkin Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 22 at the Recreation Area 10-11:30 am. This event is co-sponsored by the Maclure Library. Wagon Rides, fresh popped popcorn, and of course, decorating pumpkins are all highlights for the event. In 2007 140 people attended, in 2008-200, 2009-100, and 2010-125 folks.
