Recreation Director’s Report
September 14, 2011
This fall the Recreation Department is offering our annual Hunter Safety Course. Pittsford resident Mr. Rick Hedding is the instructor for this class. He enjoys teaching his students knowledge & skills that most of them will retain and use for the rest of their lives. This is the 7th year he has taught this program for the Recreation Department. Mr. Hedding works for the State of VT Parks and is also a State of VT Deputy Game Warden.
The Youth Soccer Program kicked off another Saturday morning season on Saturday, September 3. Over 94 children 4 years old – 6th grade are participating in this 5 week program. Participants numbers are down only slightly (112/2010, 110/2009, 92/2008, 98/2007, 93/2006, & 90/2005). Mr. Dick Williams, the former Otter Valley Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, and his own kids are assisting me again with the actual on-field instruction of the 4 & 5 year olds and the 1st& 2nd graders. Games for the 5th/6th grade teams are scheduled to begin on Saturday , September 17th.
Other programs the Recreation Department is sponsoring this fall are the Pittsford Pumpkin Party, a Halloween Teen Dance, and Men’s & Women’s Open Basketball. The Recreation Department is currently searching for a Cardio-Kickboxing/Aerobics instructor for the season, November – April.
In November the Recreation Department usually sponsors a Snowmobile Safety Class, and the Annual Holiday Craft Fair. Family Fun Nights already have been scheduled for the winter.
On Thursday, August 24, 2011 the Recreation Department & the Pittsford Seniors hosted our monthly luncheon at the Vermont Police Academy. 36 seniors from the local community attended the luncheon. August marked the forth year anniversary of this popular program. The monthly turnout averaged 44 the first year, 41 participants the second year, 45 last year, and 47 this year. Wonderful food and wonderful support from the Vermont Police Academy helps this program prosper. Each meal is made from scratch by the Chef Bob and his assistants, the same crew that prepares & cooks the meals for the Academy. The Recreation Department is assisting the Pittsford Seniors with a trip to the Paramount in Rutland on Thursday, December 1, 2011 to watch Natalie MacMater. The fee is $20 per person. Bet-cha Transit has been hired to take care of the driving responsibilities for the evening.
