On Friday, February 4, 2011, at the VT Police Academy, Maclure Library and the Recreation Department cosponsored the second of three Family Fun Nights to be held this winter. The theme for this particular event was “Chinese New Year” with approximately 125 people attending. . The Maclure Library provided theme based arts & craft projects that children and their parents enjoyed constructing together. With help from the Lothrop PTO, the Recreation Department provided two bounce houses from Funny Business Entertainment, LLC. Why have two bounce houses one might ask? Well we do it for a couple different reasons, the most important one being for the overall safety of everyone; because of the large number of children that typically attend we like to have one house set up for the smaller and younger kids and a second house set up that’s designed more for the older participants. This keeps a natural age separation to some degree that really works well for us. Two it makes economical sense to have a second apparatus because it doesn’t cost that much more to have the second house brought in at the same time, since the contractor is already there. The Recreation Department provided other activities and games for the children to take part in, such as “Giant Connect Four, Checkers, Chess, & Dart Ball”.
On Thursday, January 27 (luncheons normally are scheduled for the 4th Thursday of the month), the Recreation Department and the “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored our monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. I’m delighted to report that 59 people attended this wonderful program. Chef Bob did an outstanding job preparing the roast beef & twice baked potatoes. Each luncheon features a keynote speaker. The January speaker was local business owner & sheep farmer Jim McRae. The luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.50 for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) so they can get out and socialize with neighbors and friends. AT THE REQUEST OF THE VT POLICE ACADEMY THE NEXT MONTHLY LUNCHEON IS SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2011 @ 1:00 pm, (ONE DAY EARLIER THAN USUAL). The menu will be baked chicken, wild rice pilaf, carrots and cherry pie for dessert. A salad bar is always available. All foods are homemade, including the soup, bread, and desserts. The keynote speaker is going to be Council on Aging AmeriCorps Volunteers to discuss the programs Council of Aging has to offer.
On Thursday, January 20 we held the first Pittsford Day Committee for the 2011. The next meeting scheduled for THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10 @ 6pm at the Town Offices. At the meeting there will be more discussion of the 2011 date as well as finding more volunteers to sit on the committee.
On Wednesday, February 16 during the Lothrop School Winter Recess the Recreation Department is sponsoring a School Break Fun Day. In the morning the group will go to the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. After lunch the group will go swimming at the VAC Mitchell Therapy Pool. There is a minimum of twenty participants, I’m happy to report that we have meant the minimum. The maximum we can take is thirty, typically it sells out. Pittsford Recreation Area Swim Area Supervisor, Kayla Gallipo, along with Brian & Savannah Lynch will be our paid staff. There will also be a handful of middle school aged students who will helping belay and help the staff keep an eye on all the participants.
