OLD BUSINESS

FY 2007 Work Plan

The Recreation Committee received a copy of the FY 2007 Work Plan to familiarize themselves again with the actual details of the document. R. Adams had been questioned by a committee member as to it contents a few weeks before so he wanted to make sure the document was discussed during the meeting so that everyone was clear as to what tasks the Recreation Department was going to complete during FY 2007. Painting the exterior of the Bathhouse and replacing the fence around the Swim Area are the biggest tasks before the Recreation Department.

Jon Kimball EAGLE SCOUT Project

Earlier in the summer J. Kimball contacted the Recreation Director R. Adams to ask him if the Recreation Department had any improvements, tasks, and/or projects that needed to be completed. He explained how he needed to find a final project that he could work on and complete in order to earn his Eagle Scout Patch. One afternoon R. Adams and J. Kimball meant at the Recreation Area. With the Recreation Area’s Long & Short Term Goals in mind the Recreation Director identified several different projects from the goals list. From there it was up to the Boy Scout to form his own plan (which needed prior approval from his Scout Master and a state wide Boy Scout governing body) with specific details how the project would be completed.  On Friday & Saturday, August 4th & 5th, Jon Kimball, his crew of volunteers, and a John Deere backhoe dug up and removed all the sod from around the swing set at the Swim Area. They replaced the sod with the approved amount of protective surfacing otherwise known as “woodchips”. The second element to J. Kimball’s plan was to repaint the two dug-outs on Memorial Field. Both projects came out beautifully. Now the children using the swings can do so much safer than ever before, while the freshly painted dug-outs will give players a new sense of pride when they’re playing.

Stain Pavilion

R. Adams mentioned that with the help of R. Ketcham he has been able to secure volunteer labor to stain the picnic pavilion at the Recreation Area. R. Adams reminded everyone that the stain had already been donated by Bill Drummond & Aubuchon Hardware. Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, August 15.

NEW BUSINESS

Fall Programs

R. Adams highlighted the Fall Programs that the Recreation Department would be running over the next few months. VT Hunter Safety and Youth Soccer are usually the most popular programs this time of year. This is the time of year that Yoga and Kickboxing begin. The Recreation Department will also sponsor Open Gym Nights for adult basketball at the VT Police Academy for the women and at the Lothrop Gym for the men. In conjunction with the Brandon Recreation Department we’ll offer 4 different Teen Night Dances throughout the fall, winter, & spring.

2007 Movie Nights at the Recreation Area

On Saturday, August 5 the Recreation Department and Cinema Sid’s Traveling Film Festival sponsored a FREE outdoor screening of “Charlotte’s Web” at the Recreation Area. Approximately 40 people of various ages were in attendance. R. Adams said he was trying new and different ways to utilize the Recreation Area. He thought the showing went well enough to look into sponsoring more movies next summer. R. Adams indicated that he plan to discuss the topic with the Select Board before he agrees to anything for next summer. R. Adams stated that he thought this would be an excellent way to get different groups of people out to the Recreation Area.

FY 2008 Work Plan

R. Adams indicated to the Recreation Committee that he would soon be putting together the FY 2008 Work Plan. He asked each of them to think about items such as projects and/or programs that they would like to see included in the plan and to e-mail them or call him directly. The Recreation Director stated that he’d like to have a DRAFT copy completed by the September committee meeting.

With no further business to discuss, S. Eugair made the motion to adjourn the meeting.

M. Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
