Meeting was called to order by Rob Ketcham at 7:10 pm. Members of the Recreation Committee who were present include Kathy Shortsleeves, Mark Poljacik and Kathy Brown.
Recreation Director Randy Adams was also present.
Recreation Committee members Michele Cioffredi and Mark Winslow were not present.
The minutes of April 12, 2005 were read and accepted. M. Poljacik made the motion to accept the minutes as read.
K. Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The Recreation Committee read the Recreation Director’s Report. R. Adams also gave verbal report on the Swim Program. He noted in response to the feed back he has received over the past few summers that this year he made a couple changes to the Swim Lesson program in hopes to attract more families to register for lessons. R. Adams stated instead of offering only 2 – three week sessions of lessons the Recreation Department was offering 3 two week sessions. He said parents often complained that a 3 week session was too long of a commitment for them over the already short summer season. R. Adams also noted that the third session is scheduled August 8-19 and because August is the typically the least busiest month of the summer at the Swim Area he hopes by offering lessons at this time will attract more visitors to swim. In 2004 there were 41 kids registered for the first session, in 2005 there were 51
Pittsford Day Celebration
R. Adams reported that preparations for the P. D. C. are ongoing. Arrangements have been made with the Pittsford Lions Club and the Pittsford 1st Response to handle the food portion. The Lions will be cooking hamburgers and the first response will be bringing their hotdog wagon. Four different local bands have been booked to provide music for the day long event. More and more details will begin to fall into place as summer quickly approaches.
Trails Committee/Rutland Walk Program
Betsy Morgan, of the Pittsford Trails Committee, arrived at 7:20 pm. She was there to talk about the Rutland Walk program and to begin discussions about the possibility of the Recreation Department offering other community based programs that would get people interested in walking/exercising. B. Morgan asked the Recreation Committee to think about different ways to get residents interested in taking better care themselves through exercise. Some ideas that were discussed include a 1 or 2 day program that would introduce the Pittsford Trail System to residents.
B. Morgan also stated that “there is a real communication problem in Pittsford” meaning that for what ever reasons people, groups and organizations have a hard time getting information out in Pittsford., and an even harder time getting residents to participate in activities or programs. R. Ketcham again motioned the idea of the Recreation Department coming up with some type of Year Round Calendar that could be used to advertise the Recreation Department’s programs well in advance.
R. Adams stated that he had been contacted again by Don Lajoie. He stated that he researched into depth what the cost have been to sponsor the Fishing Derby and after speaking to the people who used to assist the Rotary Club with the fishing derby he told R. Adams the budget would be close to $400.00, which was $300.00 less than he first reported. R. Adams said he hated to see the Fishing Derby end and reported with a little assistance the Recreation Department could sponsor the program. Scott Kirby made the motion that the Recreation Department make arrangements to sponsor the Fishing Derby.
Mark Winslow seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Fund Raiser Policy @ the Recreation Area
R. Adams presented the Recreation Area Fund Raiser Policy that the Select Board approved at their regular meeting April 6, 2005.
Recreation Area Uses
On behalf of the Board of Selectmen and Michael Balch, Town Manager R. Adams asked the Recreation Committee to begin thinking about how the Recreation Area is being used presently and is there a need to change the current procedures to allow different uses.
With no further business to discuss, Mark Winslow made the motion to adjourn the meeting.
Scott Kirby seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50 pm.
