Recreation Director’s Report

On Saturday, November 21, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm in the Lothrop Gym the Recreation Department will be sponsoring the annual Holiday Craft Sale. I’m happy to report that Kelly Connaughton of Pittsford has agreed to take the position as the Craft Fair Coordinator. She has plenty experience running these craft types events. She is very organized person and the Recreation Department couldn’t be happier! She a fellow crafter so she knows all the ins & outs of how they should run. At this time we twelve crafters who’ve paid in full. There will be many unique items for folks to purchase. This includes an annual basket raffle to benefit “Pittsford Christmas for Kids” which Laurie Hemple is in charge of. Folks can contact me at the Recreation Department or Kelly to participate. In 2014 the craft fair donated $835 to the Pittsford Christmas for kids formally known as Santa Fund (2013/$852, 2012/$1140.75, 2011/$848, 2010/$208).

On Saturday, October 24, 2015 the Pittsford Recreation Department sponsored two activities at the Pittsford Recreation Area. The day began @ 9:00 am with a “Shot Gun Start” of the fifth annual Fall Disc Golf Tournament held on the Pittsford Recreation Area Public Disc Golf Course, an 18-hole venue. This fall we had 28 people take part in this benefit tournament. The Recreation Department raised $280.00 to go towards improvements to the disc golf course. Thank you to all that participated. Over the five years the Recreation Department has raised over $1180.00.

The Pittsford Pumpkin Party is still the main attraction of the morning and was co-sponsored by the Maclure Library. Bonnie Stewart, Maclure Librarian and I would like to thank each and every one who helped us. Families came to the Pittsford Recreation Area to enjoy a bright sunny, cool and breezy morning. It’s great to see year after year kids come out to the Recreation Area to take part in this Pittsford tradition. The Maclure Library staff & volunteers do a great job setting up all the supplies that the kids use to decorate their special pumpkin. In 2014 we set a new program record of 350 people. In 2015 we had 100 folks join us.

Thank you to Winslow Farms for supplying us with all the wonderful sugar pumpkins, apples and the delicious cider. A special “thank you” goes out to the Winslow Family and their endless support of the Recreation Department.

Thank you the Pittsford Fire Department for delivering a hay wagon & stairs we used for our wagon rides after you’ve had a late night at the Haunted House. The wagon rides are a highlight and kids literally wait in line in anticipation for the rides to begin. These rides around the Recreation Area create long lasting family memories. Thank you to Rob Ketcham for being our main driver over the years. Mr. Ketcham is always available when the Recreation Department needs help one way or the other.

In November right after the fall youth soccer season ends the Recreation Department will be cosponsoring with the Brandon Recreation Department a basketball program that will allows kids to get to know other kids from Neshobe and Lothrop Schools. Kids in grades 3rd and 4th grades will go to the Lothrop Gym and grades 5th-6th grades will go to the Neshobe Gym for instruction and pickup basketball. This program is meant to be a nice transition for families as soccer ends in mid-October and the basketball begins in December. In 2014 the Pittsford and Brandon Rec sponsored Otter Community Youth Basketball clinic was a huge success with 35 participants.

The Recreation Department is happy to be sponsoring a bus trip to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the world famous Rockettes in New York City on Saturday, November 14, 2015 is SOLD OUT. Transportation will be provided by Mountain Sun Tours of Mendon, VT. Thank you to Kathy Shortsleeves for all her work promoting and organizing this trip. Her hard work enables folks to take in the city with family and friends.

Since the last week of October, the Recreation Department has been working on putting the Recreation Department and Lothrop Basketball programs. We are expecting a large number of participants in our 1st – 6th grade program this winter and have tried to plan accordingly. All practice and game schedules are 95% complete. The season begins 12/2/15 with a preseason coaches meeting and then a player and parent meeting for the Lothrop 5/6 grade teams. Teams practice for the month of December. Games begin after January 1st and last through the end of February, except for the Lothrop 5/6 teams usually play in the Glodzik Tournament in West Rutland in March.

Teen Dances are scheduled for Fridays 12/18/15 and 3/18/16 at VT Police Academy in Pittsford 7:00 – 10:00 pm. We NEED HELP and are looking for volunteers to help us that night. I noticed that one of the PTO’s lip sync contests is scheduled for 3/18/16 the same

Family Fun Nights are scheduled for January 8, 2016, February 5, 2016 and March 4, 2016 at the VT Police Academy. The Pittsford Recreation Department and the Maclure Library are teaming up again to offer three FAMILY FUN NIGHTS during the winter months. Each Fun Night is full of fun, which includes art and crafts, physical activities, and entertainment. Don’t miss out.

The Recreation Department wanted to thank Mark Winslow again for all his help over the years. He was nominated by the Recreation Committee on 11/3/04 and was appointed to the Recreation Committee by the Select Board on 11/10/04.

Mr. Winslow you’re a fantastic a role model for all to follow. I appreciate your dedication to the Recreation Department over the years even as your kids moved on to high school and now into college. Where did all that time go? You and your family have been great to the Recreation Department, thank you. You have gone out of your way over the years to provide the Recreation Department with a great deal of knowledge. Providing wonder insight to topics that Recreation Committee was working on. No matter if you’re coaching a game or at a Recreation Committee meeting you could be counted on for fair play, honestly and teaching hard work pays off. I know the Recreation Department is a much stronger place because of what you brought each and every meeting.  Thank you.

– Randy Adams email 9/28/15 Mr. Winslow & Recreation Committee

The Recreation Department opened the Recreation Committee Vacancy search on 10/17/15 and it closed 10/31/15. The Recreation Department received one Letter of Interest. That candidate will be at the Recreation Committee meeting on 11/10/15.

The Recreation Director contacted Mary Ann Goulette, Town Manager, Town of West Rutland. She stated “the benches are from Telescope Furniture in Granville, NY.   They run about $700-800 each but they usually have some seconds and closeouts. Good luck with your project!”
