Recreation Director’s Report

October 14, 2015

On Saturday, November 21, 2015, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Lothrop Gym the Recreation Department is sponsoring the annual Holiday Craft Sale. There will be many unique items for folks to purchase and an annual basket raffle to benefit “Pittsford Christmas for Kids”. In 2014 they donated $835 to the Pittsford Christmas for kids formally known as Santa Fund (2013/$852, 2012/$1140, 2011/$848, 2010/$208). The Recreation Director is currently searching for a Craft Fair Manager. Laurie Hemple has agreed to run the basket raffle. The Recreation Department is currently searching for Craft Fair Manager that takes place Saturday, 11/21/2015. Loretta Johnson, Mrs. Davis & their volunteers did great WORK over the years. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Job description for the Craft Fair Organizer: A craft fair organizer has to be organized. The organizer must contact the venue & with the help of Pittsford Recreation must select the venue and date and be responsible for any building use paperwork that needs to be filled out (the Rec Director may do this part). The organizer will help to create flyers & advertise the event. He/she/they will also send out and receive the registration forms and money. They should keep the information organized and the money safe. They should organize for tables for set up with the school and Rec Dept. They should also be available the night before to set up all tables. Tables should be labeled so vendors can find them easily when they arrive. If you choose to do a basket raffle, you will need to organize that as a second entity. The money from sales of tables would all be accounted for and go to Pittsford Christmas for Kids. Anyone who is interested can contact Randy Adams, Recreation Director directly.

The Recreation Department is happy to be sponsoring a trip to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the world famous Rockettes in New York City on Saturday, November 14, 2015 is SOLD OUT. Transportation will be provided by Mountain Sun Tours of Mendon, VT. Thank you to Kathy Shortsleeves for all her work promoting this trip.

The Recreation Department is hosting our 5th annual disc golf tournament at the Pittsford Recreation Area Public Disc Golf Course on Saturday, October 24. In 2012 proceeds from this event went to the OV Varsity Baseball Field Improvements & Upgrades. In 2014 the money raised will go towards the course maintenance needs. The fee to enter is just $10 per person, two-person teams and singles (who will be paired up with someone) are welcome to register. The event begins at 9:00 am with a Shot Gun Start.

The Saturday morning Youth Soccer program ran September 5– October 10, a full six weeks now. Over 83 children 4 years old – 6th grade are participating. Participants numbers are even the past three years (82/2014, 82/2013, 88/2012, 94/2011, 112/2010, 110/2009, 92/2008, 98/2007, 93/2006, & 90/2005). Mr. Dick Williams, the current Otter Valley Boys Varsity Soccer Coach, and his own kids are assisted me again with the actual on-field instruction of the 4 & 5 year olds and the 1st& 2nd graders when they didn’t have game of their own. I’d like to recognize Amanda Cook, the Recreation Department’s U10 girls soccer she came when asked and was a huge help on four separate dates. Thank you Amanda. Also thank you to OV Middle School Girls Coach John White for scheduling girls to come the Recreation Area on couple of early mornings to assist. Thank you to Mary Kingsley and Phoebe Wood. The U12 BOYS 5th/6th grade soccer team & the two U12 GIRLS 5th/6th grade soccer teams are sponsored by the Lothrop Elementary School. Practices historically began the first week of September. The past two seasons we’ve had to start a week earlier because both the Lothrop and Recreation Department teams play in the Rutland Rec. Dept. League this fall. This was done as a way to ensure an adequate number of age appropriate games could be found. Over the past few years it was becoming more difficult to find games for all our teams. In 2014 Lothrop didn’t have enough interested at the U12 5/6 grade boys level. Only 5 boys registered, they needed 8 to play.

On Thursday, September 17 “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 46 people pre-registered for the September meal. The monthly luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($5.00 donation for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) but also so they can get out of their daily routine and see neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 22 @ 1:00 pm. The menu for that meal is Apple Braised Pork with vegetables, fried rice, and Macaroon cupcakes.

On Sunday, October 11, 2015, 11:00 – 4:00 pm the Pittsford Recreation Area host the Pittsford Sheep Festival. This was their 22nd Anniversary and we’re pleased that they wanted to hold it at the Recreation Area. Admission is free. The festival features a number of sheep and wool products and activities. A variety of sheep breeds where on display and sheep shearing demonstrations were held in the afternoon. There were activities for the kids, food & live music.

The annual Pittsford Pumpkin Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Recreation Area 10-11:30 am. This event is co-sponsored by the Maclure Library. Wagon Rides, snacks, and of course, decorating pumpkins are all highlights for the event. In 2007 140 people attended, in 2008-200, 2009-100, 2010-125, 2011-250, 2012-300, 2013-200 and last year we had over 350 people who attended the largest yet!!!

On Saturday, October 24, 2015 the Recreation Department is hosting our fifth annual disc golf tournament. Details of the event and registration forms can be found on the Town of Pittsford website.

For the third year the Recreation Department will be cosponsoring with the Brandon Recreation Department an “open gym” basketball program that will allow kids to get to know other kids from Neshobe and Lothrop Schools. TBA. This is meant to be a nice transition for families as soccer ends in mid-October and the basketball begins in December.

Teen Dances are scheduled for Fridays 12/18/15 and 3/18/16 at VT Police Academy in Pittsford.
