Recreation Director’s Report

February 9, 2010

On Friday, February 5, 2010, at the VT Police Academy, the Maclure Library, Lothrop PTO and the Recreation Department cosponsored the second of three Family Fun Nights to be held this winter. The theme for this particular event was “Barn Yard Dance” with around 75 people attending. At our Family Fun Nights the Maclure Library provides many theme based arts & craft projects that children and their parents look forward to constructing. The Recreation Department is in charge of providing other activities and games for families to take part in, such as “Giant Connect Four, Checkers, Chess, & Dart Ball”. The tunnels are extremely popular for our target age group of 3 graders and younger. One of the main reasons we offer these events is to give Pittsford families a “free” program that gets them out their houses, during the winter months, for an hour and half to socialize with friends and neighbors and to allow their kids a chance to burn up a little bit of their built up energy. Our third and final Family Fun Night for 2010 is scheduled for Friday, March 12, when theme will be “The Wild Wild West”. Thanks to Rob Ketcham who helped with the pick up process.

On Thursday, January 28, 2010 (the 4th Thursday of each month), the Recreation Department & “Pittsford Seniors” sponsored the monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. Over 40 seniors pre-registered and took advantage of the program. Each luncheon features a keynote speaker. Lifetime Florence resident David Markowski, a former Pittsford Selectmen, and local business owner of “Markowski Excavating” came to enlighten everyone on the water project taking place right now in the Town of Pittsford. The Sr. Luncheons are to give seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.50 donation for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) so they can get out socialize with neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, February 25 @ 1:00 pm. Following lunch Laura Vien from RAVNA, Marketing and Public Relations Associate will be the guest speaker.

The 1st & 2nd grade youth basketball program finished their 6 week program last Sunday already. I’d like to thank Bill Crossmon for coaching the 1st graders and Carlo Falco & Tammi Blanchard for coaching the co-ed 2nd grade team. Carlo & Tammi made their practices fun for the players and exposed them to new skills through drills. For the first time a small scrimmage was set up for this very young group. I’d also like to thank Toni Poalino for coaching the 3rd/4th grade girls team. This team should be very proud of themselves. They started with only six players and Toni had to recruit some kids to come out and play basketball for the first time. Add in the 3 3rd grade girls that made ten and that was the team. It was special to see these players improve each and every time I saw them play.

On February 1, 2010 the baseball league representatives from each town met here in Pittsford to begin working on the 2010 season. We talked about league starting and ending dates, etc…

On Wednesday, February 17 during the Lothrop School Winter Recess the Recreation Department is sponsoring a School Break Fun Day. In the morning the group will go to the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center. After lunch the group will go swimming at the VAC Mitchell Therapy Pool. There is a minimum of twenty participants, I’m happy to report that we have meant the minimum.
